The United States-Egypt Trade and Investment Council, established under the 1999 Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), met October 29-30 in Washington, D.C. to promote expanded bilateral trade and investment in both goods and services. The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Bryant Trick, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative, and Mr. Yehya Elwathik Bellah, head of the Egyptian Commercial Service.
“The recent Trade and Investment Framework Agreement meeting in Washington, D.C. is another example of the strong economic and trade relationship between our two nations,” said U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Herro Mustafa Garg. “This meeting is part of a series of high-level dialogues this year, including the second session of the U.S.-Egypt Joint Economic Commission and the U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue, that reinforce the United States and Egypt’s enduring strategic partnership and mutual commitment to advancing peace and economic stability in Egypt and the broader region.”
During the meeting, the United States and Egypt discussed a range of bilateral trade and investment issues in the agricultural, automotive, and technology sectors. They also discussed the importance of intellectual property protections and strong labor standards.
Total bilateral trade in goods between the United States and Egypt was $6.9 billion in 2023, and Egypt remains the largest destination of U.S. foreign direct investment in Africa with $13.7 billion invested in 2023. There are over 1,000 U.S.-affiliated companies operating in Egypt today. The economic partnership between Egypt and the United States continues to grow stronger and provides prosperity and economic security for both Egyptians and Americans.
